Carol's Apple Spice Mix

Every year when the apples are ready in our local orchards, this fun recipe comes to mind.  Right now, according to one nearby orchard, the following are available in their store: Paula Red, Ginger Gold, Gala, McIntosh, Cortland, Honey Crisp.  Only McIntosh are currently available as pick-your-own.

One autumn when our friends Carol and Larry visited us, they brought a jar of this delicious spice mixture, and Carol wrote out the recipe for me.  This mix is delicious (no pun intended) with fresh apple slices as a snack.  Carol says she has also sprinkled this on baked apples or on apple salad.

Spice Mix for Apples

1/2 cup brown sugar
1 tsp fennel seed
1 tsp caraway seed
1 tsp. allspice
1 tsp. cinnamon

Mix and enjoy!  Amounts can be varied according to taste.

(I would think this could also be buzzed in a blender to make the seeds less obvious and maybe spread their flavor throughout the mix a little more.)

Now go get yourselves some nice crisp apples to go with this mix!  My favorite is Honey Crisp, but those Ginger Golds are delicious also.

  1. That sounds good! I've made a mix of sugar, cinnamon, and a sprinkle of sea salt for apples tricking the grands into eating them. Can you believe they vastly preferred apples when cut into French Fry shapes...thank you, Pampered Chef...and sprinkled with the aforementioned not at all fancy mix. I'll have to add some carroway seeds...fennel not a favorite even if I do like licorice. Haven't these past few days been gorgeous September at its best?

  2. Your mixture sounds good too. French fry shapes ... who would have thought? I'm not a fan of either caraway or fennel seed, but I do enjoy both in this mix. As she says, you can adjust quantities; I think nutmeg might not come amiss either, especially if one was leaving out the seeds.

Yes, these past few days have been absolutely gorgeous! I was just sitting on the back deck working on my Sunday school lesson and soaking up the sights, scents and warmth of this afternoon. Beautiful! Just wish I had more ambition...

  4. Oh this sounds wonderful! I love the hand written recipe too, it is a very special one indeed. Fall is definitely here with the cooler days and nights, but we don't have much color here because of the lack of rain. Hoping to get some rain next week. Happy early Fall to you :)
