Saturday six

Just popping in on a Saturday afternoon to share a few blessings from this week.  Here goes:

1.  The opportunity to have our missionary friends Bill and Karen visiting our church last Sunday to update us all on their ministry in Papua New Guinea.  It was a wonderful day of fellowship.

2.  The blessing to be able to volunteer this week at The Wilds of New England.  It continues to amaze us that God is using us even in a tiny way in this wonderful ministry.

3.  Everything going smoothly in all of our projects -- my hubby's painting, carpentry and floor installation projects and my own work in the kitchen which helped keep volunteers and staff well fed.  It took a lot of detailed planning but I am praising the Lord that everything went so well.  We prepared lunches and dinners in the Inn, below.

4.  Lots of time with people!  Getting to know our fellow volunteers and staff a little better as we worked together and also shared meals around a table. Two phone calls with my friend Jennifer this week; it was good to stay caught up with her even while out of town.  Instagram messaging with my daughters and even a message from granddaughter Emily.  Getting to attend a discipleship Bible study on Tuesday night.  Having a wonderful, iron-sharpening-iron visit with my younger friend Cassie after supper last evening.

5.  Being able to go out for brunch yesterday with our friends Terry, Bill and Karen.  What a treat that was!  It meant taking a few hours out of our time at TWNE, but was well worth it to be able to get our widowed friend Terry a little time with these dear ones she remembers from years gone by.  It was a refreshing time for all of us.

6.  Small amounts of free time so I was able to do a little bit of crochet and counted cross stitch,  and even a little bit of blogging.   I was also able to have a truly blessed quiet time each morning and do some studying ahead for Sunday Scripture posts.

It was a busy week but a good one.  Hope all of you had a good week as well!

A few blessings from this week

Here are a few blessings from my week:

1.  Being able to be back worshiping with our church family this past Sunday was a huge blessing.  Yes, things looked and felt different, but we are worshiping and serving the same changeless God!

2.  Another major project accomplished for my dad's trust.  One more big task (and a bunch of smaller ones) to go!

3.  Getting a lot of painting and cleaning done at the cottage; getting some furniture moved there.  Lots still to do, but it's looking good and smelling a lot less musty.
4.  Being able to hear our young friend Sam preach a message at his church on Sunday afternoon.  Such a joy to see our spiritual children walk in truth!

5.  Seeing plans come together for some upcoming time with family.  Details to follow, but here's a hint ...

And those are some blessings from the week just past.   I hope that your week has held many blessings as well!

A few blessings from the week

Photo by Abby at Little Birdie Blessings
So I ran out of time for a Friday five, and I don't want to necessarily come up with six things for Saturday; hence the thought of a few blessings from the week.

1.  Some productive cleaning and rehabbing time at the cottage we're working on.  Below is an older photo, taken in the mid-1990s; a metal roof was added in the 2000s.  This is taken from the back of the cottage.  The large room at the end is living/sleeping space; in the middle is a bedroom and a small bit more living space; and the little area at the far end is the kitchen.  You can't see it, but a small screened porch is off the kitchen.

This newer photo (from 2018, I think) is taken from the kitchen end, so you can see the porch.

2.  Another blessing is our work crew who helps out frequently, since they live next door:
The boys show up pretty much every time we are over there!  Always good spending time with these grandkids.

3. Time with our friend Terry on Tuesday.  To see our friend cooking and serving a meal, when last year at this time she was clinging to life, is a huge blessing.  After lunch we went over to the New Hampshire Veterans Cemetery where her husband is buried.  A lovely, tranquil place.

4.  Lovely phone chats with my faraway daughter Joanna and my "daughter of the heart" Jennifer.

5.  In-person chats with my local daughter Carrie as we work together at the cottage or in our comings and goings there.  (We are getting necessary hot water from her house!)  Another huge blessing for me this week is to see Carrie finding time to post in her blog, Life on a Back Road.  She is the one who got me started with blogging, so I'm happy she's back to posting herself.

There you have a few blessings from my week!

Friday five ~ May 29

Here goes with another Friday five!  (Isn't the illustration above simply the sweetest?  It came from a 1980s calendar my girls loved as children.)

1.  Days and days of beautiful, sunny weather.  Wednesday felt far too warm for May; we had 94ยบ here.  But it has been lovely to have such beautiful spring days to enjoy in the midst of the difficulties.  It really seems that God has given us this spring beauty and warmth to encourage us and to point us to Him.  Every season is in His control, and this one is no exception.

2.  Eating out on Friday night.  Not takeout -- a real restaurant where we sat down and ordered and had our food brought to us, and everything!  Yes, the dining was outdoors, but it was such fun.  Fried haddock has never, ever tasted so delicious.

3.  Getting the process started for several important tasks that need to be accomplished.  It's a blessing to see how God blesses and prospers our way as we look to Him.

4.  Time this week to list some new things in my Etsy shop (link in sidebar), plus the fun of finding several unique items I'll be listing this summer.  Below is a sweet notecard I hope to list this evening.  So seasonal ... lily of the valley is blooming right now in our gardens!

5.  An ice cream date with my hubby on Tuesday evening.  Ice cream season has begun!

And there is my simple Friday five for this week.  Have a wonderful weekend, everyone! ๐Ÿ˜€

This week's Friday five

Time for another Friday five!  Here are five blessings from my week:

1.  The fun of making some free Scripture graphics using Canva (see graphic at top for one example).  I find this helps me fix the verses in my mind even better as I work at memorizing them.

2.  A glorious sunrise one morning this week.  We don't often get sunrises this nice here.

3.  A drive around the big lake for an errand on Saturday.  We got ice cream too!

Same lake on a summer day some years ago.
4.  The many wonderful Bible studies and devotionals that people like Rand Hummel and Reba Bowman are making available online, and the wonderful podcasts out there too.  Even if we can't get to church, there is no excuse for becoming spiritually stagnant during this time.

5.  The amazing weather we've been having lately.  Flowers, bushes and trees are beginning to bloom.  It's been warm and beautifully sunny with such gorgeous blue skies and sweet fresh breezes blowing.    It strikes me that God is exceptionally good to allow us this beauty to enjoy during a time that could be quite discouraging.  Below are just a few flower photos from around our yard.

Friday five for May fifteenth

Here goes with another Friday five!

1.  Spring slowly coming to New Hampshire.  Yesterday we took a drive about 45 minutes south, and were surprised to see the leaves popping out and apple trees and flowering bushes  blossoming much more than our trees and shrubs up here.  (Photo below is from a previous springtime.)

2.  Our favorite local ice cream spot opening for the season.  The outdoor seating was not available yet (hopefully that is coming in the next few days) but the ice cream is as delicious as ever.   Photo below is from last year.

3.  Lovely phone conversations with our faraway daughter and with Jenn, my "daughter of the heart" this week.  A sweet card from our local daughter also blessed my heart beyond measure.

4.  A wonderful Mother's Day service live streamed from Grace Baptist Church in Elko, NV.  They did a special parking lot service for this day, and what a blessing it was to see the familiar faces and cars of family and friends!  If you would like to hear the message we heard (it was a true blessing!), go here: When Mothers Come to Jesus.  I loved seeing how Pastor Jeremy related this not only to mothers, but also to the inexplicable situation we are all living in right now.

5.  Time this week for a bit of long-range planning.  I woke up on Monday and realized we are headed for Utah and a family vacation in far fewer weeks than I had thought.  The planning was necessary to help me figure out just what I need to accomplish between now and then.

And that's this week's Friday five!  Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!

Friday five with a Mother's Day vibe

Since Mother's Day is coming up Sunday, I thought it might be fun to talk about five things with a Mother's Day theme.  Going through old cards and photos, as I've been doing so very often lately, has really made me think about family in general and mothers in particular.  The four-generation photo above, taken at a wedding, shows my grandmother, great-grandmother, my aunt Dot, and one of Dot's children.  So here goes with a Friday five concerning some mom-related blessings:

1.  My mother and mother-in-law.  Both very different women, but great role models in their different ways.

My mother was the brownies-in-the-oven-after-school type, which I know not everyone was blessed to have.  She was a fabulous cook and baker, and supper was amazing almost every night (except when liver was served).  As I've mentioned before many times, she was also a wonderful seamstress who made many, many of my dresses, jumpers and skirts over the years.  (I've got a whole post about that in the works.)  Our house wasn't pristine, but it was comfortable and decently neat.  I'm guessing the photo below was from Easter in 1960 or so.

With seven kids, my mother-in-law baked multiple loaves of bread a few times a week and sometimes an entire loaf would be devoured before it cooled, according to my hubby.  He and his siblings remember with great affection certain foods that she made.  She's still with us, in her 90s, but not cooking much any more.   She was more of a casual housekeeper and thought nothing of spending the day swimming or hiking with her kids rather than spending it at home.   That's my mom-in-law at right below, along with her sister Alice -- another delightful lady!  Photo from a few years back now.  I know I have better ones, but this was the easiest to find.

2.  My grandmothers couldn't have been more different, but they were both a blessing in my life.  My maternal grandmother lived next door to us and I was in and out of her house all the time as a child.  It was spotlessly neat and clean, even the guest rooms, and she was also a wonderful cook and baker.  She was a homemaker par excellence (and her aprons always matched or coordinated with her dresses!)  but she was also an astute businesswoman and always dressed up to go to town.  In the photo below she looks harried and a little sad.  She was widowed in her early 50s.

My paternal grandmother was a snappy dresser and it seemed as if she always wore heels.  When she occasionally stayed at our house, I remember hearing her tap-tap-tapping around overhead.  She was a practical nurse and lived in a succession of different apartments or rooms in my childhood, so when we visited we would often take her out to eat or to visit relatives.  She usually looked quite glamorous and I often thought of her as looking like a fairy godmother.  She always got us nice new pajamas for Christmas and she sent the interactive type of greeting cards for kids that included an extra like paper dolls or a maze or puzzle.  I have found one that even had a magic slate incorporated in it.  That's her below with another grandchild, I think.  For sure it is not me.

My husband's maternal grandmother died the same year we were married, (if I'm not mistaken, and I may well be) but she was a delightful country woman through and through and I learned much from her.  She enjoyed cooking and I copied many of her best recipes.  She used to make a simple but fabulous cream cake and frost it with a sort of maple fudge or penuche frosting.  Scrumptious!  I can almost taste it.  (Below, she is sitting with my hubby -- with whom she shared a birthday -- and his two older brothers.)

My paternal great-grandmother was elderly, living in a little upstairs apartment, when I was a child.  This older photo shows that she was pretty proud of her chickens back when my dad was growing up.

My maternal great-grandmother usually looked rather sad and serious, but below is a rare smiley photo of her.  This was taken at my grandmother's farm.  I remember her, barely.

3.  My aunts were terrific role models and they all blessed my life in different ways.  My aunt Joanne was definitely my favorite and she made the biggest impression on me.  That's her below with my cousin Gary and my brother Tim.  She was a busy mother of six but always had time to spend with an older niece.  She was a wonderful mother and aunt and a fantastic grandmother, always sending care packages to her grands and sisters.  Her oatmeal chocolate chip cookies are legendary in our family.

My great-aunt, Bessie, also had a huge impact on my life.  Bessie enjoyed cooking and she loved entertaining her church ladies' group.  She was also a prolific crafter and I think was probably the biggest influence in my life as far as crafting is concerned.  She loved crosswords and jigsaw puzzles and the Boston Red Sox.

4.  My own experiences as a mother and grandmother are still ongoing, obviously.  I am one of those very rare women who doesn't enjoy the baby stage.  Once they are potty trained and can hold a conversation, I do much better.  By the time they get to what I call the golden years -- roughly between age 7 and 12 -- they are pretty much just plain fun.

5.  Seeing my daughters as mothers has been an amazing blessing.  They are both much better mothers than I was, and I'm blessed to see the great job they and their husbands are doing as parents.

There's my sentimental Friday five!  Hope you enjoyed it!

And a very happy Mother's Day to all!
