New Year Hodgepodge

It's Wednesday again, and time for the Hodgepodge -- the linkup where Joyce, at  From This Side of the Pond, asks the questions and bloggers provide the answers on their own blogs.     Here goes!

 1. Every January 1st since 1976 Lake Superior University has published a list of words they'd like to see banished from the Queen's English. Words may be banished due to misuse, overuse or just general uselessness (go here to read more about how the words were chosen). Here are the words/phrases they'd like to see banished in 2024-

hack, impact, at the end of the day, rizz, slay, iconic, cringe worthy, obsessed, side hustle, wait for it

Which of these words/phrases would you most like to see banished from everyday speech and why? Are any of these a regular part of your speech? Is there a word not on the list that you'd like to add?

I'd say either slay or wait for it.  I don't like the way "slay" is used in our culture today.  It actually means to kill someone in a violent way.  I think when we throw the word around so casually we are robbing it of its actual meaning and import so when we see it in a headline involving actual murder, we will take it too lightly.

"Wait for it" is just one of those expressions that annoy me.  I don't even know why.  Too ubiquitous maybe.  And now that I think of it, "obsessed", especially as used so often on Instagram, is annoying too.

As for which of those words might be part of my everyday speech, I tend to use impact as a verb, as in impacting the lives of others, and I'm not apologetic about it.  It's a good and meaningful word.

I may use the word iconic occasionally, most often in describing a vintage image for my Etsy shop.  It's a good word too.

A word not on the list I'd like to add: well, not really a word, but POV, which I assume means point of view.  I see it all the time on Instagram, and many times it makes absolutely no sense.

2. What do you wish you'd done more of last year? Less of?

I wish I'd done more blogging, more decluttering and more crafting.   I wish I'd done less procrastinating.

3. A place you'd like to visit in this new year? Do you think you will?

We have a big anniversary coming up this year and have talked a bit about taking a trip.  I think we probably will take one, but no destination is settled yet.

4.What are three words to sum up or describe your 2023?

Stressful, challenging,  but in the end, good.

5. What advice would you like to give yourself as we begin a new year?

I find myself with a renewed love for counted cross stitch.  Picked up my unfinished January sampler with renewed enthusiasm!  And I just purchased the chart for this beauty: Poinsettias and Pines.  I saw this design on Instagram, fell in love with it, and since I had an Etsy gift card I treated myself.  I also have a gift card for Tiny Modernist and am seriously considering this Winter Traditions Sampler.  Though there are many on this site that appeal to me!  This Winter Band Sampler is another.

January sampler I'm working on.
December sampler I finished a few years back.

And that's the Hodgepodge for this week!

  1. I used to love counted cross stitch, but haven't done any in years. I would like to pick it up, but am afraid my eyesight might not be able to handle it. We have a big anniversary this year too. Conveniently my oldest daughter and her family are moving to the UK for a six-month work assignment so we'll start there and add in something else too. Happy new year!

  6. the cross-stitch projects are beautiful! I used to do counted cross stitch years ago but haven't for a long time. And I also wish I'd procrastinated less. Hope you have a great 2024!

  7. Yes, procrastination is a big issue for me as well. I am working on it. Oh, I do hope you will be able to have a wonderful adventure for your upcoming "big anniversary". For our 50th anniversary we moved into this house, literally. Had to take a break from moving to have a party at my brother in law's house, which was nice, then back to moving. LOL. That's it. That was almost 5 years ago, so maybe this year for our 55th we might make up for it...just hope we don't move again! LOL. Have a blessed and wonderful New Year. I love the cross stitch items. I personally can't do it, just never could get the hang of it, but I appreciate what others can do. Those will be lovely.

  8. A big anniversary trip will be fun to take and fun to plan. Your cross stitch projects are beautiful. I completed a few big cross stitches about 30 years ago and decided that was enough. I continue to enjoy embroidery and sewing.
    Happy New Year!

  9. I'm with Lake Superior University, as I would love to see the work "hack" disappear as a word meaning any clever idea, instead of a cheap or poor substitute for the real thing. How did that happen?

I'm sitting on two things I've been procrastinating over for months. I imagine the dread of doing them has far surpassed the inconvenience of actually getting the tasks done.

  10. Better late than never getting to commenting. oooohh you have an etsy shop....I'll have to check it out. yes, the POV kind of bugs me too...like what's the point. I hope you find a great place to take a trip to. I used to do counted cross stitch. Now, I don't think I'd have the patience. I do like embrodiery thought. I love those sampler photos you shared. I think I could do "stamped" cross stitch. lol
