A few more early-summer flowers

The weather has been so unseasonably hot, it has really felt like July or August around here.  We had temps in the 90s for many days in a row.  Monday and Tuesday nights were so hot, we spent them at our cottage in the woods in the interest of feeling a few degrees cooler.  I mentioned to my hubby that it was hard to believe Memorial Day, just a week previous, had been so cool that a campfire, hot coffee, and a fire in the cottage woodstove were the order of the day.  Not long after that, the heat arrived.

Today is a welcome change: cooler, breezy and less humid, though still with plenty of sunshine.

Our backyard irises have never been so plentiful.  I know that we really should divide them in the fall.  Maybe we'll take some to the camp.  We have two iris beds the size of the one below:

My hubby got a closer look at some of the irises.  I love how the buds are furled tightly like little umbrellas.

Last year I received a small pot of dianthus as a Mother's Day gift.  We planted it in the backyard and look how it has spread!

I had another dianthus this year and we planted it at the camp.  It has nearly gone by, but just look at the pretty markings on its remaining blossom.  There are such lovely markings on the iris too, as seen in the closeup below the dianthus photos.

God is so amazing in every way, but these gorgeous flowers prove once again that He is a God of detail, order, and creativity!

  1. Oh, they are truly lovely!!! I wish I could grow irises here in Florida, but they don't like it here. So thank you for sharing yours with us. And the Dianthus is a sweet little flower too. Happy faces...I hope you are getting a little cooler now. I remember when it used to get hot in NH, and we didn't have AC, so we just had to grin and bear it. Thankfully it didn't last long like it does here in Florida. I remember one summer we had family visiting from Florida, and we took them to Mt. Washington. It was in the 90's in the valley that week, and we were all sweating. But when we ascending up the side of Mt. Washington in the cog railway cars, we could feel it getting cooler every foot of the way up. By the time we got to the top it was so cold we were looking for very warm jackets. It didn't snow, but it could have. I think it was July. Amazing what a higher altitude can do!

    1. Yes, we have much cooler weather now as of today. Cool and breezy!

We've never gone up Mt. Washington, not even once! If we do, it will likely be on the cog railway. Arlene's daughter and family were just there and they said it was very cold at the top.

  2. I love your pretty flowers! I have some dianthus and I intend to get more! My new little garden bed got trampled and my dianthus was hardy enough to survive! It’s such a delicate looking flower but it is strong!
Heat has hit Texas! No more 80’s but thank goodness not 100 yet…..

    1. Thank you, Linda! I think we will get more diatnthus too now that we have seen how well they survived the winter.

  3. Your flowers are beautiful! Yes, it's been hot here, too. Seems a little early for all of us. Praying it's not a bad season for hurricanes and tornadoes.

    1. It does seem early, doesn't it? We have much cooler weather as of today ... much more seasonal for mid-June.

Thankful we almost never have tornadoes up here and hurricanes rarely. They can be devastating when they occur, but thankfully it is quite seldom here in New Hampshire.
