June 13 Hodgepodge

Somehow it's Wednesday again, and time for the Hodgepodge with Joyce and friends at From This Side of the Pond. Why not join in this week?  Joyce's questions and our answers can make for interesting reading; it's always fun to learn more about our fellow bloggers.  Head on over, copy the questions, then  paste and answer them on your own blog.  Speed back over to Joyce's to link up, and you're done!   Here are this week's questions:

1. What happens to the mail at your house?

I try to deal with it very promptly.  We have a basket for bills and other items that need immediate attention.  Checks go into the safe until we are ready to deposit them.  Junk mail hopefully gets thrown away immediately.  Flyers we will actually use (like the grocery store, Walmart, CVS, Rite Aid) have a dedicated spot and are purged weekly.  Personal notes, letters, and cards, of course, are perused and savored.

2. Something you always splurge on? Any guilt associated with the splurge?

This is somewhat of a more recent splurge, but I've been buying the in-store prepared fresh pineapple chunks and "berry cups" which include strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries.  I just find myself not having time to deal with fresh pineapples right now, and the berries in the berry cups always look nicer and fresher than buying the berries separately.  I am purchasing these without a twinge of guilt, for these things will actually be eaten, where their less expensive counterparts may not.

3. There are many, but what are two important questions you think every bride and groom should ask/answer before they plan their walk down the aisle?

1) Are we on the same wavelength spiritually?  Obviously if one is a believer in Christ, both need to be.  But it actually goes far beyond that.  Are both interested in spiritual growth, in truly living the Christian life, in walking with God every day, in making Him the head of their home and their lives?

2) Have we had good, quality premarital counseling?  Do we intend to take that advice or do we think somehow it doesn't apply to us?

4. What's the best advice your father ever gave you?

"It's a poor day when you don't learn something."

5. Your favorite movie where a father features heavily in the storyline?

I seldom watch movies, and those I can remember really liking don't seem to have featured fathers very heavily.  So I will cheat and pick a TV show instead: The Andy Griffith Show, which I never saw while growing up (likely due to our limited television reception) but have thoroughly enjoyed as an adult.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

We have been having such gorgeous, perfect summer weather!  Warm and sunny, yet with a glorious breeze.  We  recently acquired a patio set for our back deck (something we have never had) and oh, how nice it is to spend time out there in this glorious weather.  As a bonus, my Mother's Day plant is still alive!  (I recently saw a garden stake that reads: "I tried.  It died."  I may yet need one of those, but so far, so good.

So ends another June Hodgepodge.  Happy Wednesday, all!

    1. This week strawberries were a great buy so I did buy a pound of them. I used most of them in a strawberry rhubarb pie. But the fruit in the prepared berry cups is already washed and so it saves time in that way, too.

  3. My splurge would be a pedicure. I love having someone else paint my toenails as it is getting harder to get that done myself.

    1. Hi Ann!

Thanks for visiting! Yes, my dad had a lot of pithy sayings that he always quoted as we were growing up -- and far beyond that! He was a very wise man.

So glad you stopped by! Visit anytime!

  5. Your Mother's Day flower is beautiful. I have not always been the biggest Father's Day fan since I lost my daddy early in life, but I do try to put on a good show for my husband who is an amazing father. I have been trying to control my splurges lately, so nothing comes to mind right now:) I hate dealing with mail. That is one of my things I don't enjoy in life. I try to deal with it promptly as well because I am a stacker by nature and that can be a deadly stack soon of junk.

    1. So very true about the "deadly stack of junk"! My husband and I both tend to be stackers, as you put it so well.

I'm sure Father's Day will become more enjoyable over time, with a grandchild coming. Hope it's a good day for you regardless.

Yes, that hanging plant is called "Old Glory" since it has red, white and blue flowers all in the one pot. So far it is still alive ... some sort of record for me.

  6. Your scenery is beautiful! Especially love the window photo! I'll have to look for those fresh fruit cups. Sounds great for a summer day. And of course I agree with your pre marriage questions. Have a wonderful Wednesday!

    1. Yes, that window photo ... that is at my family's summer cottage -- built by my grandparents in the 1950s for all to use. Binoculars on the porch window ledge are pretty much a fixture to watch for wildlife across the pond. The kayak photo was taken at the same place.

    1. We have all of the seasons of TAGS (The Andy Griffith Show) and watch them repeatedly. There are a few books that talk about the filming of the episodes and they are so much fun to read after watching. My favorite of the books we have is titled Mayberry 101.

  8. Hi, I'm visiting from the Hodgepodge. It's nice to meet you. What a pretty blog you have. I love the polka dot background.

Your photos are beautiful. Water photos are always so calming. I assume you are a kayaker. I've never done it, but I would like to one day. It looks like fun.

I adore the Andy Griffith show. Such a wise dad (and man) Sheriff Taylor was.

I agree with you about splurging on food that will actually get eaten versus spending less on food that will probably get wasted. Food (especially cheese) is my splurge item too.

If you have time, I'd love you to pop by for a visit.

    Blessings,

    1. Hi Patti,

It is lovely to have you here! I love my blog background too and am not likely to change it. Just like it the way it is!

Indeed, water photos are so calming and I love that. My hubby and I love picnicking by a river or lake when we want to relax.

I'm actually not a kayaker. My husband is and finds it relaxing, but I do not. That photo was taken in 2015 when our daughter and family were visiting from Nevada. We borrowed a couple of kayaks so there would be enough for everyone who wanted to use them during their stay at this family cottage. I thought the blue water and the colorful kayaks made for a great photo. It's one of my favorites!

      Have a wonderful week!
      God bless,
      Mrs. T

  9. Oh I loved my kayaking days...long gone now, but fun while they lasted. My favorite kayaking journey was on the river through town. I found an entirely different world there along the river. So many people have charming backyards that border the river...some even had docks and kayaks.

I like your dad's comment and I think he's right. My dad taught me not to believe everything I read or heard or even saw. I think that that has served me well.

Those fruit cups sound delightful. I must look for them. Sometimes I splurge and get a watermelon and eat it all by myself in just a few days.

    1. I have noticed often on riverbanks people have docks, kayaks, canoes -- and often they have lovely backyards, as you mentioned. I would certainly want to do so if I were fortunate enough to own a home with a water view and access.

Your dad had a lot of wisdom, too, I'd say. My dad had many sayings like that and we showcased some of them on the tables for the reception after his funeral, along with photos.

Yes, Hannaford has those fruit cups in varying sizes. They are prepared in-store (they have melon cups as well) and they often look nicer and fresher than the boxes of strawberries, etc. My hubby loves fresh pineapple and for the longest time I bought whole pineapples and processed them at home. Now I would rather spend a little extra and get them prepared in-store.

    1. There's not a lot on TV worth watching, from our point of view, so we don't have cable ... just DVDs including all the seasons of Andy Griffith!
