Springing into the Hodgepodge

Wednesday means it's time for the Hodgepodge with Joyce and friends at From This Side of the Pond.  Head on over, get the questions, and then answer them on your own blog (or in the comments if you don't have a blog).  Then go over to Joyce's to link up!   Here are this week's questions:

1. On this first official day of spring tell us something (besides the weather) you're looking forward to in this season of the year.

I'm looking forward to feeling better.  Healing every day from that crazy fall I took on the ice, but a ways to go yet.  The hot pack, cold compress, and OTC pain meds are still pretty close friends of mine.

2. When it comes to spring cleaning would you rather wash windows or wash baseboards? Clean out closets or clean out the garage? Dust ceiling fans or dust bookcases? Wipe down the patio furniture outside or wipe down the light fixtures inside? Any of these tasks recently completed?

Let's make it simple.
• A toss-up.  I dislike both equally.
• Closets.
• Bookcases.
• Light fixtures.
• No.
(No bending or stretching is going on here right now -- although I did just wipe down the sconces in the bathroom and wash the light globes, so I guess I can't truthfully say I've done none of the above.)

3. Your favorite thing to make/eat that calls for cream cheese? Sour cream? Whipped cream?

Cheesecake is probably my favorite food made with cream cheese.  Although -- as a young girl, I remember having potato chip and cream cheese sandwiches at my cousin's house.  Delicious!  Interestingly, my cousin has no memory of these delights.

Sour cream -- hmmm.  Probably, lately, a squash soup that calls for this ingredient.  If you missed it, find the story here: Best Squash Soup.  Photo is from the Cabot cheese site.  Recipe's from there, too.

Whipped cream -- I love real whipped cream!  One of my favorite uses for it is in what our family calls Reese’s Pie -- chocolate and peanut butter to the max.  The photo below, from Taste of Home, shows the vanilla version of this pie -- but chocolate is the way to go!

4. I read here a list of commonly mispronounced words. What is a word that gives you trouble when it comes to pronunciation?

Of that list, I didn't know how acai was pronounced.  As a child, though, I taught myself to read by way of newspaper comic strips and so I read a lot of words wrong.  For example, I thought of the word "bedraggled" as "bed-raggled."  You know, all raggled and rumpled from being in bed.  (I've since learned that at least a couple of my friends read this word the same way.)

5. What's a song you love with the word 'rain' in the title or lyrics?

The first one that came to mind was "September in the Rain" -- the Chad & Jeremy version from the 1960s.

6.  Insert your own random thought here.

This does not look like the first day of spring.  As I write this, on Tuesday afternoon, there is still a ton of snow out there.  The temperature is around 40ΒΊ and the sky is brilliantly blue.   I guess you could say the sky looks like spring, but nothing else does -- and it certainly doesn't feel that way!

  1. visiting from the hodgepodge - brrrr - snow still on the ground for you! It is 37 here in Alabama but feels like 31 with a high of 56. It was 79 on Monday! Crazy spring weather here, too!

  2. Wow, sure is chilly for you all there in Alabama today! It has been such a crazy spring here too. Three nor'easters -- yet back in February we had some beautiful warm days, all the way up to 70 degrees!πŸ˜‰

  3. I don't think I read about your fall. So sorry you're still feeling the effects. Hope you are completely healed soon. Take care.

    1. Hi Joyce!

Yes, my fall is mentioned in the preceding post and is the reason I didn't take part in last week's Hodgepodge. Slowly mending...😯

  4. I'm so sorry you had a fall! I hope you recover soon so you can enjoy spring whenever that snow melts! It's been in the 20s here and still a lot of snow too. I'm hoping that April brings some warm weather! And I can't believe I didn't mention cheesecake. A real favorite, one I try to avoid. Lol

    1. I too hope that April brings some warm weather. We still have SO MUCH SNOW. There will be a lot of mud when all that melts.

I don't have cheesecake often, but it's definitely my favorite way to use cream cheese.

  5. Hope you recover quickly. That Reese's pie looks so yummy.

    1. Thanks, Katie. I am doing a little bit better every day.

You should try the Reese's Pie. It is fantastic!

  6. I know you will be glad to be able to move again freely. I don't do spring cleaning in the sense anymore. I try to keep things continually running. When I still taught school, I would do a big cleaning either on my spring break or the first week of summer.
    Nothing like real whipped cream!

    1. I am the same way regarding cleaning ... I try to keep up with things a la FlyLady, and it works out in many areas. Right now I'm behind in everything.

Moving more freely every day and so thankful!

  7. I am so sorry that you are still in so much pain. I do remember though that it took me several weeks when I fell. The potato chip/cream cheese sandwich sounds tasty. I will put chips on my lunchmeat sandwich sometimes...makes for a great crunch! Take good care and I hope you are as good as new very soon!

    1. Yes, I remember you saying it took several weeks with your own injury ... and then you reinjured it. Sure hoping that won't be the case with me. I am stepping VERY carefully these days. The pain is less every day. I've actually forgotten to take pain medicine a time or two, which to me is a great sign!

  8. I too am looking forward to feeling better. I had a tight muscle that was squeezing my sciatic nerve and it's been a bear! Here's to feeling better.

    1. Oh, that sounds incredibly painful! I have had sciatica before (mostly with pregnancies) and it is so painful. Your situation sounds even worse! Hope you feel better soon!

    1. Thanks, Julie! I think I'm about 85%! Still a couple of sore places, but in general I am moving so much more freely.

  10. So sorry that you are still dealing with the results of that fall. Still praying.

Loved the “bed~raggled”story. πŸ˜„ I was so sad to learn that Phoebe, a beloved character in a book I was reading long ago, was Fee-bee and not Fobe. I never could think about her the same again. Ha!

I may have to try that childood recipe of yours! Chips taste good in lots of sandwiches.

September in the Rain is one of my favorites, too. I like to play it on the piano where the lilting bits come in to depict falling leaves.

Have a good week...looks as if we both may skate on that storm...hope that many do.

    1. You are so blessed to be able to play the piano, Vee. I had the opportunity for lessons as a child but passed them up. Pretty sure I could never get it now at my age. Interestingly, all of my kids can play, but we no longer have a piano here.

I'm feeling better every day. A few sort of peripheral issues going on, but basically the back pain is less every day. I'm so thankful!

Just curious if the book with Phoebe was Eight Cousins. I loved that book and Phoebe was an especially appealing character.

We didn't even see a flake of snow here from that storm. How about you?

    2. A spit is about all I saw. Aren’t we blessed?!

    3. Indeed we are! We did have a little skim of snow on Saturday night/Sunday morning, but nothing serious. Still plenty of snow in the woods, however.

  11. It doesn't look much like Spring here, either. I'm off on a snow day and watching the snow as it just keeps coming down.

  12. I've always read bedraggled just like that ever since I first saw the word, in fact, I still think of a sleep-rumpled person each time I come across it! I hope your week is a blessed one!

    1. That is hilarious! I'm so encouraged to realize that quite a few other people have read the word the same way.

You have a blessed week too!

  13. Ooochee! I hope you recover quickly from your fall! I think spring cleaning should be a definite no-no for you for the time being!!

    1. I agree, Barbara. I am very prone to standing on chairs to do particular tasks. Going to be avoiding that for awhile!

I'm feeling better every day. I've made huge progress since it first happened.
