The First Spring Day

Beautiful graphic from Free Pretty Things for You
For  years I have saved a couple of verses from the poem "The First Spring Day" by Christina Rossetti.  These were quoted on a page from a Tasha Tudor calendar many years ago.  I clipped out several quotes from the calendar as well as the beautiful artwork, and display them seasonally.

I always have the poem verses from "The First Spring Day" displayed either on my hutch or on the spring ribbon board.  Here they are:

I wonder if the sap is stirring yet,
If wintry birds are dreaming of a mate,
If frozen snowdrops feel as yet the sun
And crocus fires are kindling one by one:
Sing, robin, sing;
I still am sore in doubt concerning Spring...

The sap will surely quicken soon or late,
The tardiest bird will twitter to a mate;
So Spring must dawn again with warmth and bloom,
Or in this world, or in the world to come:
Sing, voice of Spring,
Till I too blossom and rejoice and sing.

~ Christina Georgina Rossetti

I have seen the robins -- and the maple sap, at least, is stirring.  But crocuses and snowdrops are still deep under the snow here.   Still,  I know spring will come, because the Bible tells me so:

"While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night, shall not cease."  (Genesis 8:22)
You can't read what it says, but the little printed card at the right of the soup tureen is this poem, clipped from a calendar.
Hope you have enjoyed this poem!  It has been a meaningful one to me.
