Chef's hats galore!

Lately I have been on a binge of making chef's hats for various children in my life. I saw this pattern and loved it. You can access the pattern here. It is available in a pdf as well. It did work up very quickly once I got everything translated from centimeters into inches and cut out.

The idea is to use three different fabrics for a cute and colorful chef's hat. I wanted to use only fabrics I had on hand for these, so had a bit of trouble finding the right fabric for the puffy top. I finally decided this dark red checked top would be okay. Sam likes trains, so a train print worked for the headband part. A black and white Mary Engelbreit check was the perfect binding, coordinating with the railroad crossing signs on the headband.

This picture shows the snaps that make it adjustable. For Sam (age 6) the second set of snaps made it a better fit.

Chef Sam baking.

Next I wanted to make one for my 9-year-old granddaughter. I had this nifty Mary Engelbreit fabric remnant covered with spunky sayings. Green checks match the armchair in the print, so they made a good headband, with the same black/white check as Sam's for a binding.

The hat in action.

Her 6-year-old sister needed a hat as well even though it wasn't her birthday. She does a lot of baking with me. For this hat I used the green check for the puffy top, a ME cherry print for the band, and the same black/white as a binding.

Her own apron was a birthday request for my youngest granddaughter (age 2).

I thought it would be fun to make a coordinating chef's hat. Hers has the green check for the puffy top, a yellow/lavender/green print for the band, and lavender check binding.

These are so much fun to make and the kids just love them!

  2. Susie,

It is good to see you here at my kitchen table! I am so glad you like the chef hats and I hope you will have fun making some for the grandkids. It's fun to sort of personalize the fabrics. I saw some really cute cupcake print fabric in Jo-Ann's today...

    Stop in again anytime!

  4. Thanks for the sweet comments, Arlene! Always a blessing to have you visit! I doubt I would make these to sell, because I imagine there is some notice somewhere that one can only make gifts from this tutorial, not sell the items. That's usually the way it is. But they do make marvelous gifts!

  8. Gina,

So nice of you to stop by! I'm glad you like the chef hats. Hope you will check out the link and try making some. They are very, very easy. I am going to be making one more in the next week or so as Sam's little sister is turning 4 and is very envious of his hat. So it'll be her turn!

    Stop by anytime!

    God bless,
