I didn't have time to plan ahead, or I would have brought a warm main dish like chili or even a casserole. Since there wasn't time for that, I made sandwiches with turkey, provolone cheese, and baby spinach on onion rolls from the supermarket bakery. With chips and pickles, this was our supper. Above you see our dessert -- Honeycrisp apple slices (in the plastic bag) and a jar of Carol’s Apple Spice Mix -- that would be the open jar with the spoon in it. The other jar is cream for the coffee.
Since it was so chilly, hot decaf coffee was definitely in order. I filled an insulated carafe with it and brought along a little jar filled with half-and-half cream, feeling quite like Gladys Taber as I did so. Remember how she and Jill would set out for a picnic spot with a thermos of coffee to accompany their al fresco meal? I would imagine there was a little jar of cream involved too, though I can't remember for sure. It's been ages since I've read one of her books, a situation I need to remedy soon!
My hubby had been up in this area on a work-related errand earlier in the week, and found this nice day use area in the White Mountain National Forest. He determined we needed to have a picnic here as soon as time allowed. So time allowed, and we did!
I liked the look of the river as seen through these pretty red leaves.
We were in bear country! Wonder if those snapping twigs we heard could have been a bear? The sun was fading fast.
There was a little bit of fall color here.
Longtime readers will remember how Mr. T and I used to have a picnic by the river every Wednesday night! A different river, and many years ago. It was so nice to enjoy supper at a riverside picnic table again.
That looks like the perfect place for a picnic. And I LOVE the Gladys Taber books. I have several of them that I enjoy re reading.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Arlene! It was wonderful. So refreshing.
DeleteI need to get out a Gladys Taber book for my nightstand. Think I will do that right now!
I love your picnic ideas. I need to plan one of those real soon for us. The place looks perfect. I love Gladys Taber books too. I have one I haven't read yet. It is in my plans this winter.
ReplyDeleteGood plan to read that Gladys Taber book this winter. Her books are so comforting, especially in our crazy world. I often wonder how she would view the fame that has come her way in recent years, as she was just telling about her everyday life.
DeleteYes, picnics. We love them and will make a meal into a picnic at the last minute if the opportunity arises for one. There's just something so wonderful about eating a meal outdoors surrounded by God's creation. Especially with water nearby ...
I am smiling...brings back fond memories. It’s a beautiful spot for a picnic! ☕️
ReplyDeleteI should have known you would be smiling, Vee. And I'm glad you are!
DeleteWhat a lovely spot for a picnic and such a good idea. I'd love it if such a nice spot was available for us to pop over for a picnic supper...but just doesn't happen here. Glad you enjoyed!
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry that a likely picnic spot isn't available near you, Debbie! Maybe your back yard or a porch might work for a picnic for you?
DeleteOh what fun!! You've made me want to go on a picnic too. Beautiful country, I enjoyed the pics.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you enjoyed the pictures, Mary. I hope you can go on a picnic soon. Such a nice time.
DeleteWhat a nice spot and your food sounded wonderful as well.
ReplyDeleteOh, thanks, Julie. It was simple, I just used what I had on hand. We've also been known to pack up our supper and take it somewhere nice for a last-minute picnic!
DeleteI love last minute picnics, they are the best kind! Your husband knows how to find a perfect spot!!! Sweet precious times together!!
ReplyDeleteYou're right ... these impromptu picnics are indeed the best kind! And my husband ... yes, he is a gem and knows how to find the perfect picnic spot (among his many other wonderful qualities!). I am blessed, I know, and I don't take it for granted.
