Wintry day hodgepodge

This gorgeous winter collage is the work of Abby at Little Birdie Blessings
As I'm putting together this post on Tuesday, we're in the middle of a "winter storm" which has turned out to be mostly sleet and freezing rain.  The national weather service has just extended the advisory to 10 pm, so we will see.  A good day to stay indoors, it seems to me.  The mailman had a package for me and brought the mail to the door, so I didn't even have to wend my way out to the mailbox!

Here are this week's Hodgepodge questions from Joyce at From This Side of the Pond:

1. "The cure for anything is salt water-tears, sweat, or the sea." (Isak Dinesen) Would you agree? Of the three, which has 'cured' you most recently?

Hmmm .... I've never heard that before, and don't think that I agree.   But it is a very interesting thought.   I always find it healing to spend time by the sea.  Watching the waves is such a powerful reminder to me that the great Creator is also holding all things together, including everything in my life.

"For by  Him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers; all things were created by Him, and for Him;
"And He is before all things; and by Him all things consist."  (Colossians 1:16-17)

Of course tears can be healing, and so can hard work.  I am really not sure which one 'cured' me most recently.  I guess perhaps tears, at the thought of a dear friend moving away, though knowing she is making the right decision.

2. What's something you can't eat without salt? Do you normally salt your food a lot, a little, or not at all?

I don't think I could eat an egg without salt.  I often salt my food a little, but not without tasting it first.  I only add salt if it seems to need it.  We don't keep salt on the table.
No salt needed for these!
3. Sands of time, bury your head in the sand, built on sand, or draw a line in the sand...which sandy phrase could best be applied to something in your life right now?

Sands of time, I would guess.  I'm immersed in decluttering two houses and am finding so many vintage items that I have no idea what to do with.  Kid gloves, anyone?

4. A favorite book, movie, or song with an island setting or theme?

The Anne of Green Gables series, both the books and the earlier movies from the 1990s.

5. Yesterday-did you run your day or did it run you? How so?

Understand, I'm writing this on Tuesday, so the yesterday I'm describing is Monday.  It ran me.  We had tentative plans for friends to join us for supper, but bad weather finally called a halt to that.  I spent a lot of the day looking at weather.com to see what was happening.  This has been one of those storms where no one really seemed to know how it would go.  So between preparing a meal that would work for company, spiffing up the house just in case, and checking the weather, I didn't accomplish much else other than laundry.

6. You're on an island holiday. Will I most likely find you parked in a beach chair, shopping in town, on the back of a jet ski, or snorkeling off the back of a catamaran?

No contest at all.  You will find me parked in a beach chair with either a counted cross stitch or embroidery project in hand.  None of the other three choices would be anything I'd find relaxing.

7. What do you think we humans most take for granted?

The fact that we are breathing.

8. Insert your own random thought here.

I snapped this photo of icicles with my Kindle one December day when leaving my dad's home.  The sun was sparkling so brightly on them! The Kindle photo does not do them justice , but was a lot better than getting no picture.  That sparkle just lifted my spirits!
And just for fun, here is a picture one of my grandkids took,  of an icicle at their home.
Happy Wednesday to all!

  1. We moved south a year ago, and I'm enjoying the milder winter for sure. We used to get those enormous icicles on our home in NJ and they are pretty but also a little scary. Sorry you missed your company! Have a great day, and thanks for joining the HP : )

    1. Thanks for your visit, Joyce, and for hosting the Hodgepodge! I so enjoy taking part.

Our icicles can get quite a bit bigger than this -- enough so that grandsons think they would make great swords. Those big icicles can be scary, especially where there's a chance they could fall.

You have a great day too!

  2. I don't think I've ever seen a bird clinging to an icicle before. So pretty!

    1. Isn't it? I'm not sure which grandchild took the photo, but it came out well. I'm not sure I'd ever seen a bird clinging to an icicle, either. Thanks for visiting here at my kitchen table!

    1. Thanks, Pamela. It just hits me that way every time. Those waves ... the tides ... all in full control of the One of whom it was said, "even the wind and the sea obey Him" (Mark 4:41). Such a blessing!

  4. I enjoyed many things about your post, but the bird on the icicle is so sweet!! I might not mind an icicle if it were accompanied by such sunny skies!

    1. I loved the chickadee on the icicle too. And the gorgeously blue sky behind it ... I think the photo was taken in mid-December.

  5. Such huge icicles! Our winter, even though I live in Virginia, has been pretty mild.

    1. Oh, we can get icicles that are much bigger than this, Tammy! I have to say that our winter has been pretty mild also. More rain than snow, and not a lot of frigid weather, although we have had some below-zero temps. Thanks for visiting!

    1. It does, doesn't it, Arlene?! Lately I haven't been finding any time to stitch at all. I'm so envious of all the cross-stitching you get done. Guess I just need to jump in and do it.

  7. Oh my! Is that a chickadee clinging to an icicle? I have never seen such a thing. What a mess yesterday was. When we thought that it would all be snow, I lined up my plowman. Then that mess. The plowman didn't come and I figured that I'd be attempting to clear the mess. After nine last night, the plowman did come! I was so happy to see him. Now I still have some cleaning up to do, but not as much.

It amazes me what a happy group of likeminded folk I have in my little corner of Blogdom. Hodge Podge responses reveal this. What a blessing!

    1. It is indeed a chickadee clinging to an icicle, Vee! Apparently it's a pretty common sight at my daughter's home -- here in NH -- for she wrote that it's always fun to see the chickadees perch on icicles. Not sure which grand took this but I think it was likely Sam (12) or Julia (10).

Yesterday's storm was so crazy! The forecast and advisory kept changing. Glad your plow guy did get there in the end and got most of the yard cleaned up for you.

You are right, a like-minded little corner of Blogdom. I wish I'd gotten involved in the Hodgepodge sooner. It's so much fun to read others' answers!

  8. Oh my, just look at the sweet bird! I must say that I have never seen a bird hanging from an icicle before :)

We had some nasty weather yesterday with lots of snow and wind. Due to the weather my husband and I were not able to make it to a memorial service for a dear friend of ours that passed away. I hope your weather is much better today, dear friend.

Wishing you a joyous Wednesday! Hugs!

    1. Isn't the chickadee on the icicle adorable, Stephanie? As I mentioned to Vee above, it's apparently a pretty common occurrence at my local daughter's home. I'm happy that one of the kids captured a photo!

That is too bad you had to miss the memorial service, Stephanie. Hope your weather is nicer today as well. It seems somewhat windy here, but at least the rain and sleet have stopped and there is some blue sky up there!

  9. Good morning! Well looks like we shared some similar thoughts on these questions, including the thought that eggs must be salted, lol. LOVED your pictures, but I do have to agree with the others....that sweet little birdie on the iscle is just sooo adorable. Sorry you missed your company. Hope you have a wonderful day!

    1. We did share some similar thoughts, didn't we, Debbie? When I was answering the question about the salt I was thinking about the verse from Job that says, "Can that which is unsavory be eaten without salt? Or is there any taste in the white of an egg?" (Job 6:6) Egg yolks have some flavor, but whites ... nope. I must have salt on my eggs!

Isn't that chickadee adorable? So glad the kids snapped that photo!

  10. Love your hodgepodge answers today... my favorite island would be PEI of course, being my birthplace, oh how I love it and miss it so! And yes, a beach chair my favorite place to be, just watching the waves is the most comforting thing to do. I hope the weather doesn't cause too much problems for your area, that freezing rain stuff is so nasty. We have had a January thaw come through, and now it is snowing again, which makes me very happy, I'm not ready to lose our snow yet :) Hugs to you today dear friend! Stay warm!

    1. I did not realize that PEI was your birthplace, Marilyn! We have vacationed (camping) there a half dozen times and simply loved it. We always camped at Cabot Provincial Park. What a glorious beach there!

We have snow here, but the freezing rain and sleet just added a crunchy, slippery layer on top of it. Not a good day to get out and walk.

Hugs to you today as well. Hope it's a splendid day for you!

  11. So far we are all parked in a beach chair ! Would be a nice gathering in reality !!

  12. It certainly would be! I think Prince Edward Island would be a great location for such a gathering, but one of our New Hampshire lakes would be wonderful too.

  13. I really enjoyed your answers. Like you, I feel so close to our Creator when I am on the shore looking out into the vastness of the sea! Your eggs over easy are just the cutest things! You seemed to have been getting our leftover weather on Monday...there were of course terrible storms in the south that were moving up the coastline. And that darling bird on the icicle...I love it! Happy Thursday :)

  14. Thanks, Debby! Glad you enjoyed the post!

Yes, looking out over the vastness of the sea, watching the waves and listening to them crash ... such a powerful reminder of our great Creator. I feel the same when I look at the stars glittering in the night sky.

Those felt fried eggs were fun and easy to make. I have made loads of felt food. My grandchildren really enjoy it.

The chickadee on the icicle ... so cute. One of my grands snapped that picture at their home.

Happy Thursday to you as well!
